Vail Recreation District Gymnastics Facility

Firm Credit : Fritzlen Pierce Architects

Description
The Vail Gymnastics Center is the result of the collaborative efforts of six public entities: Eagle County School District, the Town of Vail, Vail Recreation District, Upper Eagle Valley Water District and Red
Sandstone Elementary School. The recreation center is situated on a steeply sloping site, adjacent to Red Sandstone School. The upper level has a gym and viewing areas, the lower level is dedicated to locker rooms, offices and 2 exercise studios.
Design Features
The building is embedded into bedrock on the north and opens to the south with glazing. The project required sensitive geotechnical design to stabilize the slope and minimize site disturbance. To bring the project to fruition, firm principal Lynn Fritzlen worked with community interests for over 18 months to build consensus on the building program, budget and funding.
Sustainable Practices
The facility optimizes solar gain and day lighting with south facing windows and doors. It conserves community resources by serving multiple user types. The gym is available to students from the adjacent primary school, community residents and out of town guests.
