Batavia Theater Renovation

Description
The Batavia Downtown 56 Theater Players are moving to a new location thanks to a Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) grant from New York State. The new theatre and studios will be located at Batavia Center in an 11,000 sf commercial space which was previously doctor’s office. Construction is scheduled for February of 2020.

Design Features
The new performance center will include the theater, rehearsal rooms, lobby, box office, offices, dressing rooms, costume and set storage and a dance studio. The intimate performance space will be complemented by a re-purposed exterior courtyard for break out. LFA will use local artisans and theater volunteers to provide inspiration for sculpture, furnishings and fixtures. Partial roof and mechanical dunnage replacement, upgrades to the fire alarm system and replacement of entry sidewalks and plaza are part of the scope.

Sustainable Practices
This project will revitalize downtown Batavia with an adaptive re-use of an abandoned space in an underutilized shopping center. The re-use of existing space in lieu of new construction or demolition minimizes the carbon footprint. It will energize the diminishing downtown economy by attracting visitors and residents to a pedestrian oriented environment with restaurants and shopping.
